I was all set to post a rant about how, with all due respect to the families invovled, I really don’t need to be fed up to the minute updates on the status of the family of an NBC exec involved in a plane crash this weekend. Adding somewhere that I thought the story of the helicopter crash in Texas that killed 7 soldiers and the crash of the plane on its way to pick up Fmr. President Bush were both stories that I personally thought were more interesting and worthy of the air time.
But then I decided not to (or did I just? shrug).
Instead, I’ll use this post as a shout out to Google News, MyYahoo! and the other sites and aggrigators at my fingertips for allowing me to make my own news cycle and quickly.
Because I have these tools in front of me I can take five minutes of my time to actively learn about those two stories instead of sitting back and passively absorbing the story I don’t care as much about that’s engulfing TV news crawls, Headline News stories, Monday Night Football commentators, or where ever else its coming from. So, turning to Google News and a few other sites I have all the coverage I need of the topics I want to learn about…
- Bloomberg: Seven U.S. Soldiers Killed in Texas Helicopter Crash
- AP: Officials Investigate Texas Copter Crash
- KXXV-TV: News Channel 25 Statement on Blackhawk Crash
-
KXXV-TV: Soldier Messages
- AP: Jet to Pick Up Elder Bush Was Warned
- AP: Victims Of Bush Jet Crash Identified
- AP: Investigators Find Crashed Private Jet’s Black Box
Sure, Google News isn’t exactly new on the scene or revolutionary in its coverage, and I’ve had a tailored page via MyYahoo! for a fwe years, but from time to time I think its important to step back and show appreciation for these tools and what they let us do.
